Invader: the artist who pixelates the world

Invader is a world-renowned French urban artist, famous for his mosaics inspired by retro video games, particularly Space Invaders, which have taken over cities across the globe. His work is based on a unique concept: integrating digital art into public spaces using ceramic tiles, turning the streets into a vast artistic playground.

Launched in the late 1990s, his project involves « invading » cities by placing pixelated characters on building facades, bridges, and iconic landmarks. Each piece is carefully designed to blend into its environment and is cataloged in a database, allowing enthusiasts to track and hunt his works worldwide.

Invader’s approach blends street art, geek culture, and visual hacking. He transposes pixel aesthetics into the physical world, adding a new dimension to urban art. His mosaics go beyond Space Invaders aliens—he also depicts pop culture icons and historical figures reimagined in pixel form.

His interventions have reached a global scale: from Paris to Tokyo, New York, Hong Kong, and London, over 4,000 mosaics have been installed, each numbered and precisely mapped. His project has even expanded underwater and into space, with a piece launched into orbit in 2012!

Invader’s creativity extends beyond city walls. He also exhibits in galleries and releases limited-edition artworks, such as screen prints and Rubik’s Cubes, further expanding his artistic reach.

Both mysterious and anonymous, Invader blurs the line between virtual and real, transforming every street corner into an interactive art experience. His work, at once subtle and omnipresent, challenges our relationship with technology and urban space, while adding a nostalgic yet modern touch to our cities.
